Hidden deep in the jungle of the Philippines are two magical places that call travelers to see their magnificence year round. When conjuring up imaginary images of fairy tale settings few areas could be as perfect as the Hinatuan Enchanted River or the Tinuy-an Falls.
Hinatuan Enchanted River
Nestled in the jungles of Mindanao, Philippines is one of the most magical places on earth. The Hinatuan Enchanted River is a saltwater river that flows into the Pacific Ocean from within the jungle. At approximately 80 feet deep and not very long the area pulls in tourists from the world over who want to experience a photo opportunity and swim in the clear waters. Locals believe that the water has miraculous properties and the fact that no one is sure where the saltwater comes from perpetuates the mystery surrounding it. Regardless of where the Enchanted River originates from the crystal clear light blue waters are not like anything you will see anywhere else in the world.
The Tinuy-an Falls
Called the widest waterfall in the country the Tinuy-an Falls are certainly a magnificent natural formation worthy of even the fussiest photographers. From a natural point of view, the Tinuy-an falls are 95 meters wide with waters pouring over the precipices of 55 meters. Perhaps the most beautiful feature of the falls with the three tiers which cascade water in the shape of a large, sheer curtain. Dubbed the Niagara Falls of the Philippines, the falls have those in the know flocking to sit in awe of their beauty but for those wishing to escape the regular travel spots a smaller waterfall is located not too far away. The falls cascade into a small pool at their base before flowing back down into the river that will ultimately feed the Pacific Ocean.
How to Get There
Flying directly into Butuan City Airport from any of the major international airports in relatively easy. Once there van’s and taxi’s are available to take travelers to Hinatuan. The River and Falls are well marked off but can be a long trek through the jungle. For those wanting a quicker mode of transport, motorcycles are available for hire to navigate the forested area.
